Happy Halloween!

This year, we had a Fireman and his trusty sidekick dalmatian. At one point, we discussed turning our wagon into a firetruck to pull through the neighborhood. The idea was eventually tabled due to lack of time and the fickleness of young children. Who wants to invest several hours in creating a firetruck that no one will ride in?

The kids together. You'll see I've learned from last year: take the kids outside for a picture BEFORE IT GETS DARK. Duh.

We took the kids to a few friends' houses to trick or treat before coming home for dinner. No one was overtired, hungry or cold. Perfect. After dinner, I was shocked when William wanted to go out again with HIS COSTUME ON. Turns out, he put it all together. Costume+Halloween= CANDY. I thought we would maybe get to 2-3 houses. I wanted to keep the bar set low so I wouldn't be disappointed if we went home early. However, William RAN exuberantly to 12 different houses before I decided we needed to go home. He was AWESOME. It is so much more fun now that he understands!

After the second round of trick or treating (to different houses! I swear!), William was delighted to be the official candy distributor. No one else was allowed near the bowl. He had a serious job to do!

I convinced Amelia out of the puppy costume by offering up the kitty hat. $0.10 at a garage sale - BARGAIN!

9/24/10: Church Camping

We baked a Lemonade Cake for the Church Campout.  The mixer is LOUD!

Last weekend was our annual church campout. Our church reserves a group campsite and everyone is invited to rent a rustic cabin outfitted with plastic mattress, squeaky metal bed frames, gaping metal screens (holy?) and educational wasp nests built into the walls.
The kids did really well for the most part with everything, even the large storm that blew through on Saturday night.

It really is a lot (A LOT) of work to go camping with kids this age. Neither one of them is afraid (enough) of fire, wandering away or sharp sticks. Lucky for us, our small congregation isn't afraid to pitch in and give a hand when it is needed. And boy, was it needed. John and I are both exhausted from all the running, chasing and other fun - and we had a TON of help.
Just about everyone is willing to pitch in a hand by entertaining kids, chasing them away from any place that is unsafe or including them in their games.

We arrived Friday evening in time to play for a short while before going to bed.

Saturday morning we went apple picking at the orchard nearby. The tractor ride was fun for everyone until we had to get off and you know, actually pick apples.
William and his friend get ready to ride the tractor trailer out to the apple trees.

William is a huge fan of the fresh apple cider.

William was thrilled to be up front with the big kids

William played some soccer by himself and some with the other kids.

William enjoyed a fresh s'more...mmmmm!  I'm not sure how I missed out on this yummy treat (I was putting Amelia to bed).  By the time I got out to the campfire, a huge downpour sent most people scurrying off to bed.

Saturday evening we had church outside followed by a giant meal with everyone together.

Sunday morning we packed our damp selves (5+ inches of rain overnight with all windows in the cabin left open overnight) back up to go home again.

Sunday afternoon, I worked to conquer Mt Laundry while John enjoyed his first professional baseball game in St Louis thanks to some church friends. I stayed home while the kids napped and did the laundry, made chili, and took a nap.

9/24/10: Summer List 2010ed.

I know, I know. It is the end of September. Technically, summer has come and gone. But it is hard to remember that when the thermometer outside still reads in the upper 90's on a regular basis and our air conditioning is still working hard to keep us in the cool.

But! Here is my Top Ten List for Summer 2010:

1. See a parade with a marching band - Sadly, not accomplished. Not due to lack of trying on our part.

2. Swimming lessons for both kids - CHECK!

3. Camping with both kids - CHECK (in a cabin, still counts)

4. Trip to North Dakota/Minnesota: CHECK

5. Ride bikes to get Ice cream as a family: CHECK

6. Run through the sprinkler in the front yard. Even if your neighbors think you are crazy. CHECK. And, so what if I'm crazy?

7. Breakfast on the Farm: CHECK

8. Vacation Bible School: CHECK

9. Corn on the Cob: CHECK

9.5 Corn on the Cob while eaten outside in a chair with a cushion. CHECKITY CHECK.

10. Fireworks for the first time with William: Mostly a check, although John had to miss.

All in all, I'm ready for fall. I'm tired of the summer clothes and being Hot all the time. Do you hear that weather?

9/8/10: How to Bottle up Summer

One of the best parts of summer is eating the fresh tomatoes produced by our garden.  But, sometimes we can't eat fast enough to keep up with our plants' production.  So, I bottle the summertime tomatoes up by freezing them!  Here's how:
Throw the tomatoes into a pan of boiling water

Watch the tomatoes carefully.  After about 2-3 minutes, the skin on the tomatoes should split.  Use some kitchen tool to remove the tomato from the water.
Place tomato into a bowl filled with ice and water in order to cool.

Allow to cool for several minutes while you juggle the needs of your children, etc.  Remove from the ice bath and remove the skins from the tomatoes.  The skin should easily separate from the tomato.

Dice into small pieces or leave whole depending on your preference.

Place the diced pieces into a freezer safe container and freeze.  Enjoy year round!

9/8/10:First Day of School

William started school yesterday. I was working really hard to maintain my mama zen - which I think I successfully did.  He enjoyed the day and so did I.  Proudly, no tears were shed.  Although it was close when William had to leave behind the train table at school.

8/26/10: On my mind

1 Preschool starting
2. The cat
3. The carpet
4. Work. Oh yeah, work.
5. Halloween
6.closet
7. My feet

I have a lot on my mind. Not a lot of it is good. None of it is earth shaking bad news, but it's all I got right now.  This, plus a few unbloggable things are at the root of the lack of updates around here.

William starts preschool next week. It is the right thing for him to do. He needs to be around other kids and he is super excited about going. I'm excited for him. But, I'm also a little "My baby is growing up and he'll be at preschool away from me for 2.5 whole hours.....". He'll attend two days a week for two and half hours at a time. I also currently have myself crabby about their "healthy" snacks, but I think that is my own personal issue. By personal I mean that it probably isn't a big deal and I need to get over it. Or something.  Will put it on my list of things to do next week.

Ooooo that cat. That darn cat. I haven't said anything about the cat here for several reasons. a) I was hoping it would resolve itself quickly b) people have strong feelings about their pets c) I don't know exactly the best way to deal with it and I don't need outside opinions (yet, I'll let you know). d) Ewww. e) most of you are here to hear about the kids, not listen to animal woes.

So anyhow, the cat has been either a sick cat or a bad cat or both depending on how you look at it. The problem has been going on for roughly six months and the treatment has been ongoing since the middle of JUNE. I feel terrible that the only workable solution for both of our cats has been to keep them shut in our basement for the time being. I also hate how frustrating it is to not be able to help our cat because we don't know entirely what is wrong. We've spent hundreds of dollars (and quickly rising) on medical care without much resolution of the problem. Without going into a lot of detail (because, ewww), I'll tell you this has been incredibly stressful. Both John and I are very worried about how this will end up - and it stinks.

The year old carpet in our basement probably needs some replacing (see above). I'm angry at the [sick, unhappy] cat that couldn't get it together to ruin our poor quality carpet in our upper level. Not only has the medical problem been costly, but I know this carpet replacement is going to come with a big price sticker too. Yet, the carpet issue cannot be resolved until the medical problem is resolved. We cannot solve the cat issue because WE DON'T EXACTLY KNOW WHAT IS WRONG. Argh.

Stress number four: I start working in another week. What? You didn't have any idea? Actually, I've been looking for part time employment since William was about four months old. I've followed a lot of leads and applied for a few jobs. Nothing was panning out and I was feeling pretty frustrated after three years. However, I had a lot of requirements of a job and I have the luxury of being picky. I'll spare you the details leading up to my new job, but I've just been hired by our local community college to teach GED preparation courses. It is very part time and still uses my degree/s. I will work a regular schedule and work close to home. I'm excited about the opportunities this will bring as well as the challenges. At this moment though, I'm feeling stressed about William starting preschool and going back to work in the same week.  I only work mornings a week - which coincidentally are the two days a week William will be in preschool.  The timing is going to take some thinking in order to be workable.  How will we juggle it all?

Halloween is creeping up and William wants nothing to do with costumes. And although it isn't quite September, I'm stressing out. HEY, quit shaking your head! I didn't say I was worrying about things that are worthwhile, did I?

John continues to work on improving our master bedroom closet organization. He is putting shelving/new closet rods into our closet. However, this means the closet has to be empty so the work can occur. The work needs to happen when John has a chunk of time to devote to working on finishing installing the organization system.  Read: Bedtime/naptime on weekends.  The progress is slow.  Which means our room is a mess. When the kids are in there every day, the mess is spread a little thinner and a little wider.  And since most days I feel the need to get dressed, the mess continues to expand.

I haven't talked about my feet in quite some time. That is because there hasn't been much change. That isn't exactly true. I have several pain free days followed by a few days that I have pain. Enough pain running isn't an option. I've been back to my doctor who has only one more trick in his back. A trick that isn't covered by insurance because it is still considered experimental. An expensive procedure that isn't without risk (what medical procedure is?) ? I really would give just about anything to run again and find my inner peace. Just for a few moments to be lost in the beat of my heart and the rhythm of my breathing. I miss banging out all the worries and negatives on the track and leaving them behind.  I'll say it again, running is just as much (or more) for my mental health as my physical health.

On top of it all, Amelia is teething. Maybe. Or it could be the cold she is fighting. Or....I don't know, but I can tell you that patience is lacking after only 3 hours of sleep. William would probably agree. We're going on week two of a few very bad nights and I'm paying for it.

See?  There isn't anything terribly wrong.  Just a lot of things piled up to make life stressful right now.

8/26/10 Open House

Tonight we attended the Official Open House for William's new preschool.  He will be going two afternoons a week at a local church.  There are many positives for this and just a few reservations.  We're excited for William to work in a group and possibly meet some new friends from the surrounding neighborhoods.  He sure is growing up fast!  He was so excited to go to his "new school"!  He insisted on wearing his new backpack in case he needed it "right away" for something.  Such a funny boy!  School will officially start the Tuesday after Labor Day!

8/8/10 : Nana and Boppa

At the beginning of August, Grandpa and Grandma came to visit!  It seems like we spend at least 83% of the time with them on the couch reading books.  I think that makes everyone happy!
Saturday morning, we had a big BOWLING day out.  This was William's first time bowling (Amelia's too).  He was very impressed by the shoes.  Especially since Amelia didn't get any shoes because her feet are so small.
The bowling alley had a fancy ramp to help the kids roll the heavy ball down the lane.  I was very impressed and considered trying it out myself....
Amelia also bowled, but I don't have any pictures of this.  I thought I had some video, but I guess in the business of trying to keep track of the two kids and preventing injury it didn't happen.

A huge highlight is hearing Amelia call out for "Nana" and "Boppa".  She stands at the top of the steps and yells down for them.
HUGE source of entertainment: watching themselves on  Grandpa's camera!

We also enjoyed eating out and a trip to the pool with Grandpa and Grandma - again I don't have pictures.  As much as I resolve to documenting and using our camera/s every day it is very difficult at the age the kids are.  They are so busy I don't have a minute to pick up the camera for even a second it seems.  Will work harder at it though!

Pumpkin Party Weekend...x500

In the last week we have been invited to six different Halloween events*, including William's preschool party. It's hard work having so much fun! We only missed one event due to our lack of babysitter.

Amelia wearing her pumpkin knit hat. And cool shades. At the church pumpkin carving party. We don't fool around. Pumpkin carving is a serious art, which requires serious tools.
William and Daddy carving pumpkins. John and I make a good team :he cuts, I scoop (usually). I get bored with the cutting and have yet to ever finish a pumpkin on my own. John hates the scooping part. Because it is messy.
The kids got Halloween cards in the mail. Amelia was especially excited and spent a lot of time hugging and snuggling her card. As best as a card can be either hugged or snuggled.
